Climate Extremes Tighten Their Grip
Record heat across Europe, climate-fuelled fires in Canada and the Pacific Northwest, and deepening drought along the Danube are turning the summer of 2026 into a warning that the climate emergency is no longer distant or regional.
Every major Italian city was placed under the highest heat alert as Austria registered a national record of 41.2 C. Drought and falling river levels are disrupting transportation and power generation, while wildfires continue to burn across France and the Balkans. The pattern is testing public-health systems, energy networks and emergency services across the continent.
In North America, firefighters gained ground on three major fires near Spokane after more than 700 structures were destroyed and as many as 64,000 people were forced to evacuate. A separate scientific analysis found that human-caused climate change doubled the likelihood of the hot, dry and windy conditions behind Canada’s enormous 2026 wildfire season.
