Colombia Quake Death Toll Soars

Rescuers are digging through shattered buildings across western Colombia after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake killed at least 224 people, the country’s most powerful quake in decades.

The earthquake tore through Colombia’s coffee-growing heartland, striking cities including Cali, Pereira and Manizales and reducing apartment blocks and other structures to rubble. Hospitals were damaged, a cathedral spire collapsed and emergency crews worked through the night as the casualty count climbed sharply. Authorities said Cali had suffered the highest number of confirmed deaths, while Pereira and surrounding communities also sustained severe destruction.

The race to find survivors is now entering its most critical phase. Rescue crews, soldiers, police and volunteers are using excavators and hand tools to reach people trapped beneath unstable debris, with signs that some may still be alive. The disaster has become an immediate test for Colombia’s newly installed government as it confronts mass casualties, damaged infrastructure, displaced families and security concerns in several major cities.

Why It Matters

Colombia’s earthquake is today’s starkest reminder of how quickly a national emergency can overwhelm cities, hospitals and basic infrastructure. With hundreds dead and rescuers still searching unstable ruins, the immediate priority is survival, shelter and medical care. The disaster will also test the capacity of Colombia’s new government to coordinate recovery across a densely populated region while preventing a humanitarian crisis from becoming a prolonged economic one.

Elsewhere, the day’s news points to a world in which political and environmental shocks increasingly reinforce one another. The secret transfer of an American president through an airport catering truck illustrates the extraordinary security pressures created by the Iran conflict, while stalled Hormuz diplomacy is keeping oil near $90 and feeding inflation fears. Europe’s intensifying drought and heat add another layer of economic strain, and renewed attacks in Ukraine show how little room there is for geopolitical stability. The common thread is vulnerability: governments are being forced to manage simultaneous stresses to security, public health, climate resilience and the global economy.
